Audrey MacLean Caps Stellar Collegiate Season with Dipsea Victory

For Audrey MacLean, winning the Dipsea was the crowning achievement of an already impressive sophomore season. The Tiburon native, who competes for Division III Middlebury College in Vermont, placed 5th overall at the national cross country championships and took 2nd in the nation in the 3000-meter steeplechase in late May.

MacLean made history by becoming the first female runner between the ages of 10 and 33 to win the Dipsea, and she is the youngest overall winner since Reilly Johnson claimed the title in 2010 at just 8 years old. MacLean also recorded the fastest female time of the day, clocking an actual time of 57:27.

Following the race, MacLean told the Marin Independent Journal, "I guess I'm more of a track runner now in college, but the Dipsea will definitely always have first place in my heart."

2021 Dipsea champion Mark Tatum finished second, having led the race from the climb to Cardiac Hill until MacLean passed him near the Stile.

The 2025 race marked the long-awaited return of the "Historic Course," known by runners as "Door One" and "Door Two," after a multi-year absence. Rounding out the top five behind MacLean and Tatum were longtime Dipsea standout and last year's winner Chris Lundy (3rd), Clara Peterson (4th), and last year's fastest female runner from the Runners group, Heidi Reifenstein (5th). Ed Owens, who finished 6th overall, posted the fastest actual time of the day at 49:25.

The final Black Shirt of the 2025 race—the honor given to the top 35 finishers—went to 57-year-old Erik Dunmire of Mill Valley, who ran a 1:02 actual time. He and his daughter, Emma Dunmire—a rising senior at UC San Diego who placed 29th overall—won the Allan and Darryl Beardall Family Award, narrowly edging out last year's winners, Brody and Amir Barkan.

Branson High School junior and 4:47 miler Farrah Allen placed 21st overall, earning the fastest time among high school girls with an actual time of 1:03. Redwood High School's Gunnar Niemi clocked 55:50, making him the fastest high school boy.

This year's race featured a strong contingent from Alaska that made a significant impact. Lars Arneson of Anchorage was the first finisher out of the Runners section and recorded the fastest time in that group, finishing in 52:15. Fellow Alaskan Ann Dalton posted the fastest female time from the Runners group, finishing in 1:00:26.

The Dipsea Kidz program, an essential part of the race's community legacy, was well represented this year with over 30 participants. The fastest Dipsea Kidz boy was 15- year-old Kiran Allidina, who finished in 1:09:41. The top Dipsea Kidz girl was Estella Wong of Tamalpais High School, finishing in 1:19:44. The Friday before the race, Wong was also named a recipient of a Dipsea Foundation scholarship.

Finally, the Team Award once again went to the Pelican Inn Track Club. Their top five scorers were Mark Tatum (2nd), race legend Alex Varner (7th), Dominic Vogl (8th), Vincent D'Onofrio (11th), and Jamey Gifford (12th), securing the team title.

The 2025 Dipsea was a celebration of tradition, resilience, and rising talent—highlighted by Audrey MacLean's record-setting win and the return of the Historic Course. From seasoned champions to standout newcomers, and from family duos to determined Dipsea Kidz, the race once again proved why it remains one of the most iconic and cherished footraces in the country.
